Ingredients

Scale

1 large sweet onion

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon paprika

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

½ teaspoon ground cumin

½ teaspoon dried thyme

½ teaspoon dried oregano

2 large eggs

1 cup milk

1 cup water

Salt and pepper to taste

Oil in a spray bottle

Instructions

Prep the Onion:

Trim ½ inch off the top of a large sweet onion, peel the outer skin, and place it cut-side down.

Starting ½ inch from the root, slice downward to create 16 evenly spaced sections. Flip the onion, let it rest for 5 minutes to loosen the petals, then gently separate them.

Breading Mix:

Dry Mix: Whisk 2½ cups flour, 1 tbsp paprika, 1 tsp cayenne, ½ tsp cumin, ½ tsp thyme, ½ tsp oregano, salt, and pepper.

Wet Mix: Combine 2 eggs, 1 cup milk, and 1 cup water in a bowl.

Breading Process:

Coat the onion thoroughly in the dry flour mixture, focusing on the petals. Shake off excess.

Dip into the egg wash, let excess drip off, then coat again in the reserved flour. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.

Air Fryer Steps:

Preheat air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes.

Place the onion on a foil sling in the basket. Spray generously with oil, ensuring no dry flour remains.

Cook for 25 minutes, spritzing with oil 2-3 times during cooking.

Serve:

Season with salt and pepper. Pair with your favorite dipping sauce!

Notes

Use a spray bottle for even oil distribution.

Check for doneness: Petals should be golden and crispy.

For extra flavor, add garlic powder or smoked paprika to the flour mix.
